Hazelnut
Hazelnuts are one of my favorite shrubs to plant in our landscape. An extremely rugged hedgerow plant, hazels offer year-round beauty and reliable crops of nuts. Expect to start harvesting within the first few years after planting! Cold hardy and disease resistant to Eastern Filbert Blight, our hazelnuts come from amazing selections of hazelnuts from around the northern USA as well as great wild patches that we’ve discovered through many years of foraging. The blend of traits after wind pollination results in hybrid hazelnuts with an incredible adaptability to an ever shifting world. Can be grown in the shade but yields are much greater in full sun. Autumn leaves turn vivid shades of red, purple and orange. Not picky about soil, so long as it isn’t water logged. Great for stabilizing slopes. At least two are required for pollination
Hybrid - Large nuts with a mix of European and American genes. Resistant to EFB
Jefferson - European variety with good resistance to EFB that bears very large nuts.
Beaked - A native hazel that bears huge crops of small nuts. Very tasty though, and seemingly less bothered by weevils. Resistant to EFB
American - Small, native hazelnut that has a huge growing range. Resistant to EFB
Zones 3-8 for hybrids, beaked and American
Zones 5-8 for “Jefferson“
