Fig
A ripe, luscious fig in its prime is one of the true delights in the world of fruit. Up north here it is a rare delicacy indeed and one that can really only be experienced by growing your own. We grow ours in large pots with handles and bring them into an unheated outbuilding or our unheated greenhouse once the leaves fall off in autumn. They have thrived in those conditions even through -10 degree winter nights! The fruit ripens from August-September and has the taste and consistency of an incredible fig jam. They are also very fast growing and precocious, setting fruit in their first year after rooting! The leaves add an exotic feel to the garden and can also be used to wrap meats, cheeses and veggies to make dolmas.
Ronde de Bordeaux - An esteemed fig from France with good cold hardiness and exquisite flavor. Reported to be among the best for drying but we never let them get that far before devouring them!
Zones 7-12 outside, down into zones 5-6 with winter protection
Ships as a half gallon pot
