Cornelian Cherry
Heavy yields in the sun AND shade! Many other trees fruit poorly in the shade, but Cornelian cherry sets a good crop of sweet, soft “cherries“ under the shade of taller trees. Early flowers in the spring blanket the naked branches with cheery yellow blooms, reminiscent of forsythia, but with the addition of delicious fruit! Waiting until the fruit is soft makes for fantastic fresh eating, the taste reminds me of rich raspberry meets sweet gooseberry. Small-medium size trees are easy to fit into the open or wooded landscape. Not a true cherry, they are actually a member of the dogwood family. Good resistance to dogwood anthracnose, which has decimated our native dogwoods. Self-fertile but will have higher yields with multiple trees
Zones 4-8
Ships as a bare root tree
