Black Cherry
A gorgeous native tree that bears massive crops of small cherries. A perfect tree for the chicken yard! The cherries are highly medicinal and we’ve made great tasting syrups from them that we drizzle over pancakes, breads, yogurt, or really any fruity dessert. In the spring comes a dazzling display of white flower spikes that give the tree a snowy appearance. Summer brings another show with the fruit that starts bright red then ripens to a gorgeous purple. The bark is also very interesting, with purplish-brown flakes. The wood is highly desirable for it’s rich red heartwood and great rot-resistance. The only feature it lacks is colorful fall foliage. Black cherry trees also have one of the widest ranges of any native tree, growing from southern Canada, through the US, and down into Mexico. An often overlooked and undervalued native tree that I think deserves more recognition, especially among fellow chicken owners who love to give their birds free, natural food!
